- W1589955343 abstract "Many human viruses capable of causing gastroenteritis can be transmitted via water. Gastroenteritis is a communicable disease of sudden onset characterized by fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and headache. In developed areas of the world viral gastroenteritis is predominantly self-limiting with very low mortality. In developing areas of the world however, viral gastroenteritis can cause significant mortality, predominantly due to dehydration compounded by lack of rehydration therapy. In developed areas of the world, the overwhelming majority of waterborne viral gastroenteritis illness originates from ingestion of human calicivirus (predominantly noroviruses), with rotavirus, astrovirus, adenovirus, emerging viruses, and enteroviruses also contributing to the cases of waterborne gastroenteritis. In developing areas of the world, rotavirus is a major contributor to childhood morbidity and mortality with the aforementioned viruses also causing considerable morbitity. The lack of standardized viral recovery and detection techniques has severely limited the understanding of the magnitude of the potential public health threat of waterborne viruses that cause gastroenteritis." @default.
