- W1590348511 abstract "Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an exciting new field of photomedicine, but one of its major limitations is the associated skin photosensitivity, especially if prolonged. There are many new PDT compounds on the horizon and as they leave the laboratory and reach the forum for clinical human studies, one important issue to address will be precise characterization of their photosensitivity properties. Certain precautions are strongly recommended during the time period that the PDT patient remains photosensitive. Physical barriers, particularly protective clothing, can provide some protection against ultraviolet and visible light, but by far, the optimum method of protection in these patients is sun avoidance. The period of time during which these measures have to be maximized depends specifically on the individual photosensitizer. This chapter comprehensively reviews the various PDT photosensitizers, their associated lengths of photosensitivity, and above all, photoprotection measures of importance for the practitioner of this new therapy." @default.
