The Age of Innocence is a novel that depicts the conflict of the main characters in regard to their role in the society.Basically the objectives of the study are answering the statement of the problem. The objectives of the study are to find out; The American society's norms that are reflected in the novel, the influences of social norms of American society on the main characters, and the changes of American society's norms in the end of 19`h century. From the discussion and explanation, the writer can draw some conclusions based on the theories in this final project. American society in the end of 19th century still holds up social norms, they hold usage, folkways, mores and custom. Those norms tied up people in order that there is act of its member that disorders the social norms, he/she has to receive the consequence like sanction that had been agreed together. Norms that were in American society in 19th centuries was still upheld by members of its society. These norms very influenced the way of thinking and behavior of members of American society. They always thought what would be done by them was opposed with norms that exist or not, so as these norms were bound their freedom in expressing their wiling. It seems from traits and behavior of main characters in this novel. Ellen did not divorce with her husband and didn’t also marry with Newland although they loved each other, because they face Norms that were in American society at that time. In The transition of 19th to 20th centuries have many changes in American society. As many immigrants from many countries that come to that country make the condition of American society become more complex. By more complexity of America added by more improving industry and technology make changes of Norms that hold in American community slowly but sure happened.The writer hopes that the result of this study can add more knowledge for people who are interested in reading Edith Wharton’s novel. Theoretically, this final project can become a reference for anyone who is interested in analyzing a novel." @default.
