• W1590865275 abstract "Data from Indias 1992-93 National Family Health Survey were analyzed to reveal the extent and characteristics of unmet need for family planning (FP) in Uttar Pradesh. A weighted subsample of 11014 currently married women aged 13-49 was identified for analysis. The percentage distribution was tabulated (for the categories of unmet need for spacing unmet need for limiting met need for spacing met need for limiting and no need) for the state as a whole and by demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Predictor variables included age number of living children number of living sons child loss family type urban-rural residence respondents education husbands education religion caste/tribe exposure to FP messages type of road in the village and distance to an FP facility. Derived quantities were also tabulated by demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and the effect of each characteristic on need was determined using multinomial logit regression models. The analysis revealed that 30% of the women had unmet need. Only 10% of currently met need had birth spacing as its goal and 55% of all unmet need was due to unmet need for spacing. Unmet need for limiting births affected 43% of the women despite the current emphasis on sterilization. Unmet need was highest among women who lived in rural areas were illiterate or whose husbands were illiterate were Muslims were scheduled-tribe members and were not exposed to media messages. It is suggested that promotion of temporary measures such as oral contraceptives or condoms may reduce unmet need for birth limiting as well as spacing. Because substantial numbers of the women with unmet need have reported that they have no intention of using FP it will be difficult to convert need into FP use in this Indias most populous and most fertile state." @default.
