- W1592912177 abstract "The current programme of bridge assessments in the UK has identified that many existing concrete bridges do not satisfy the current design requirements for reinforcement anchorage at supports, in some instances resulting in an apparent shortfall in shear capacity. This particular problem has been addressed, in part, in the assessment standard for concrete highway bridges, BD44/95, which permits an effective bar size to be used in assessing shear capacity based on the actual anchorage length present. Research has shown, however, that the requirements of this code can be conservative. The assessment of a substantial number of similar reinforced concrete approach-spans to overbridges on the M4 has highlighted that they all appear to have insufficient shear capacity due to a particular reinforcement detail that appears not to provide sufficient anchorage at a support. Unfortunately, the anchorage present in these structures, nominally 1.25 bar diameters beyond the bearing centreline, is shorter than that for which test results have been reported, so the findings of this previous work could not be extended to their assessment with confidence. However, there were a number of reasons to suggest that their actual shear strength would exceed the capacity determined in accordance with BD44/95. A programme of full-scale laboratory-based model tests has therefore been undertaken to establish the shear strength of these slabs. An innovative testing method has been developed, combining proof load tests and failure tests, to overcome the particular problem of accounting for the variation in shear strength with load position (or shear span).
