- W1593012283 abstract "Objectives: The ‘Cerebellar Deficit’ hypothesis ofdevelopmental dyslexia proposes that, due tomild cerebellar dysfunction, dyslexic individualsdemonstrate a general automatisation deficit onboth motor and cognitive tasks. This study aimsto evaluate the hypothesis and seeks todetermine whether the severity of dyslexia and/orthe presence of comorbid learning difficultiessuch as ADD/ADHD, may be factors associatedwith the presence/absence of automatisationThe British Psychological Society282 2003 Proceedingsdeficits.Design: A dyslexic case group is matched withchronological-age and reading-age controlgroups.Methods: 50 case boys, age seven to 12, withan independent psychological assessment thatconfirms a diagnosis of dyslexia, have beencontacted via the Dyslexia Institute or local BritishDyslexia Association support groups. Each caseboy is matched with two control children,resulting in 50 controls matched on chronologicalage and 50 controls matched on reading age. Inthe first phase of this study, each boy isassessed on measures of attention, temporaljudgement, balance and co-ordination,phonological awareness and rapid naming.Results & Conclusions: Collection of case datais complete and control data is in the process ofcollection. Results from the dyslexic group areconsidered in terms of severity of dyslexia andthe presence or absence of additional learningdifficulties. Results are also discussed in terms oftheir implications for the ‘cerebellar deficit’hypothesis and for causal theories of dyslexia ingeneral, where a lack of consideration of possibleinteractions with other learning disorders mayhave been misleading." @default.
