- W1593898013 abstract "This chapter reviews that Chile has one of the longest and most complete terrestrial records of glaciations in the world and, for this reason, plays an important role in helping to determine the validity of models of global climate change. Whilst there are considerable gaps in the knowledge of the timing and extent of glaciation in Chile and of the forcing factors behind them, it is clear that the behaviour of the southern westerlies and the Humboldt current are crucial variables. The suggested relationship between the changes in these climatic systems and North Atlantic melt water production events during deglaciation points to the southern Hemisphere systems being partly driven by, but lagging behind, those in the northern hemisphere. It also reviews that there does not appear to be a Younger Dryas signal in the Magellan palaeoecological record, yet there is a glacier advance in the region that spans both the Younger Dryas and the Antarctic cold reversal. This may represent a return to southerly latitudes of the southern westerlies. The chapter discusses that there are a large number of problems in the Pleistocene glacial history of Chile and these will only be resolved by a combination of accurate dating and multi-proxy geomorphological, climate modelling, and palaeoecological approaches." @default.
