- W159431625 abstract "The present study considered oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients experiencing oral disease conditions as physical and emotional functioning that could be associated with type of oral disease conditions. It was reasoned that type of oral disease conditions that patients experiences could significantly determine quality of life associated with oral disease. Types of oral disease conditions considered were acute oral disease and chronic oral disease. A total of 122 patients were conveniently selected from a pool of patients attending Dental Centre, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, (UBTH), Benin City, Nigeria and were compared on expression of their quality of life. A t-test for independent sample conducted showed that, while there was no significant differences between two types of disease conditions on psychological discomfort and psychological disability, patients experiencing acute oral disease conditions were significantly more functionally limited, manifested increased physical pain and disability, more socially disabled, more handicapped and reported significantly reduced overall quality of life than patients experiencing chronic oral disease conditions. This study concludes that acute dental diseases have more negative impact on oral-health-related quality of life of patients experiencing dental disorders than chronic dental disease. The necessity to facilitate people's access to dental care services, especially when dealing with acute dental injuries, in order to avoid a later negative impact on their quality of life is recommended. Keywords: Oral health-related quality of life, acute oral disease, chronic oral disease. (ProQuest: ... denotes formulae omitted.) The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely absence of infirmity (WHO, 1948). In its definition, WHO acknowledges that an individual who is technically cured of disease may not necessarily be and goes on to indicate three dimensions of well-being. Physical well-being assumes ability to function normally in activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, and moving around. Mental well-being implies that cognitive faculties are intact and that there is no burden of fear, anxiety, stress, depression, or other negative emotions. Social wellbeing relates to one's ability to participate in society, fulfilling roles as family member, friend, worker, or citizen or engaging in interactions with others. In Nigeria, there is dearth of information in literature about association between type of oral disease conditions (acute and chronic) and oral- healthrelated quality of life (OHRQoL) and it's subscales, which include functional limitation, physical pain, psychological discomfort, physical disability, psychological disability, social disability and handicap among patients experiencing oral disease conditions. Oral health, despite being integral to individual's general health and quality of life, is often neglected in comprehensive approaches to promotion of general health. Indeed, oral health care is often considered in isolation by national health authorities (World Health Organization, 2006). The desire to understand relationships between type of oral disease and oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) are particularly relevant given importance of oral health in population. Gift and Atchison (1995) aver that measuring health-related quality of life allows assessment of the trade-off between how long and how well people live. Diseases and disorders that result in dental and craniofacial defects can thwart that goal, disturbing self-image, self-esteem, and well-being. Oral-facial pain and loss of sensor motor functions limit food choices and pleasures of eating, restrict social contact, and inhibit intimacy. It is necessary to differentiate between two types of oral disorders - acute and chronic oral disease conditions. …" @default.
