• W1594641107 abstract "The objective of the present study was to compare family variables in delinquent and non-delinquent adolescents to assess their relationship to criminal behavior. The study also aimed to investigate other variables that might be predictive of delinquent behavior. Participants were 311 male adolescents classified in two groups. Group 1 was composed by 148 adolescents who were institutionalized for having committed crimes. Group 2 was composed by 163 adolescents who did not commit criminal transgressions and where attending public schools. The participants were interviewed and filled a scale to assess parenting styles. The records of the institutionalized adolescents were also examined. Results showed significant differences between groups for the following variables: family configuration, anti social behavior by family members, number of siblings, conflicts within the family, parental responsivity, demandingness, and intrusion, educational practices adopted by fathers and mothers, and use of drugs by the adolescents. The data allowed for the description of criminal behavior and related variables such as age of onset, types of crimes, motivation, among others. A regression analysis showed that parental responsivity and demandingness, antisocial behavior by family members, number of siblings, use of drugs, conflicts within the family, and educational practices adopted by parents accounted for 53% of the criminal behavior variance. These results point to the importance of the role of the family and their educational practices in the development of delinquent behavior. Also, the results do point to intervention and prevention programs that could be implemented within communities to deal with drug use and crime." @default.
