- W1594790265 abstract "The concept of volunteer-friendliness is introduced as a framework for nonprofit agencies to deal with the problem of dwindling volunteer availability. Volunteer-friendliness is defined as the extent to which a nonprofit agency's staff, policies, and programs provide a positive, pleasant, and rewarding experience for volunteers and prospective volunteers. It is hypothesized that volunteer-friendly agencies would have a very favorable impact on a host of perceptual, attitudinal, and motivational factors critical to the decision to volunteer. By developing and implementing volunteer-friendly policies and programs, agencies would directly benefit in a number of important ways, including expanded availability of volunteer hours, improved volunteer commitment and productivity, enhanced agency functioning, and increased success in fundraising activities (given that volunteers are more likely to make financial donations than nonvolunteers). A conceptual model of volunteer-friendliness, consisting of four major components that correspond to stages in the volunteer process, is presented and discussed. The four components include: (1) Volunteer Attraction and Recruitment, (2) Initial Interaction with Agency Staff, (3) Volunteer Utilization and Assignment, and (4) Post-Volunteering Follow-Up. For each of the four model components, important factors that should be addressed are identified, along with specific suggestions to enhance agency volunteer-friendliness. Nonprofit agencies and researchers are encouraged to form partnerships to rigorously evaluate the volunteer-friendly model and its potential utility. Specifically, field research is needed to: (1) develop reliable and valid measures of agency volunteer-friendliness, (2) validate the concept by correlating measures of volunteer-friendliness with important agency outcome variables, and (3) developing and testing specific strategies to improve volunteer-friendliness." @default.
