- W1595269164 abstract "Alfred Jarry died in 1907 at the age of thirty-four. Thanks in large measure to his own considerable ability at self-advertisement, he was by no means entirely neglected during his lifetime. Jarry's critical reputation, however, presents a rather peculiar picture. While he was still alive those who wrote about him were, understandably enough, more concerned with his personal peculiarities than with his works. After his death little of any significance was written about him for a long time. There was a brief revival of interest in him during the short-lived Dada movement of the early twenties; and Charles Chasse unwittingly contributed to the Jarry legend by publishing a book in which he accused him of plagiarizing the character of Ubu from two old school-fellows. In 1927 Antonin Artaud and Roger Vitrac founded the Theatre Alfred Jarry for the production of avant-garde drama, but it was not until the College of 'Pataphysics was founded by a group of Jarry disciples in 1948 that Jarry came back into his own. With the increased popularity of the current avant-garde drama—the drama of Ionesco, Beckett, Genet, Adamov, Audiberti, et al — interest in Jarry revived steadily as it became evident that there was some similarity between the style of the new plays and the style of the Ubu plays. The direct ancestor of the current avant-garde drama was Antonin Artaud, who laid down the rules for the new drama in Le Theatre et son double. It is the purpose of this paper to show how Jarry's work was the seminal influence which guided Artaud and, through Artaud, the whole modern avant-garde drama. It will be necessary first to clear up what is meant by the term avant-garde. Roughly speaking, the term avant-garde means out in front of everybody else. Now, a person who is out in front of everybody else is fully exposed to the fire of the enemy. Such intrepidity, whether fearless or merely foolhardy, is shocking to the timid, the cautious, and the prudent who comprise the majority, all" @default.
