- W1595965150 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes future therapies. In multiple sclerosis (MS), as in other diseases, rational treatment depends on a thorough understanding of the disease's etiology and pathogenesis. Research into the pathogenesis of MS and especially the rapidly growing number of different animal models are beginning to reveal a remarkable heterogeneity and complexity of the pathogenic mechanisms of inflammatory demyelinating central nervous system (CNS) disease. Rapid screening of small-molecule libraries and rational-design approaches has produced peptide mimetics, a new generation of promising drug leads. A peptide mimetic is a molecule that mimics the biological activity of a peptide but no longer has a peptidic chemical nature. This offers clear advantages, because peptides commonly exhibit undesirable properties, such as poor bioavailability and short duration of action. The methods for drug delivery and targeting have been considerably improved. Cell therapy has emerged as a strategy for the treatment of many human diseases. Concerns related to immunological compatibility, ability to multiply cells in vitro before transfer, and general issues of quality control and safety now appear surmountable." @default.
