- W1596598314 abstract "This report briefly discusses the results of the Infrastructure and road safety project and compares them. The purpose of the project was to establish mathematical relations between, on the one hand, infrastructural road characteristics and, on the other hand, the safety level of these roads. These relations were established for urban and rural roads within the area known as Haaglanden, which consists of The Hague conurbation plus a few surrounding municipalities; and for provincial roads in the provinces of Gelderland and Noord-Holland. The detailed results can be found in Janssen & Reurings (2007) and Reurings & Janssen (2007a; 2007b). Such mathematical relations are usually referred to in the literature as accident prediction models (APMs). Most APMs have the same structure. They express the number of injury crashes on a road stretch in the length and traffic volume of that road stretch. Besides this, other road characteristics can be included, such as the number of carriageways, the carriageway width, and the number of exit roads. The above mentioned project used this structure. However, a difference is that road characteristics are not used as explanatory variables in the model, but that the authors have tried to develop different models for different road types. One of the reasons for this is that the traffic volumes for different road types can differ strongly. This makes it difficult to fit a good model with both the volume as well as certain road characteristics as explanatory variables. The databases used do not contain enough information to make a detailed classification of road types; it was only possible to make a distinction between single and dual carriageway roads. The difference between these two road types is the separation of driving directions; in the case of dual carriageways, the driving direction is physically separated, in single carriageway roads it is not. Seeing as a driving direction separation makes it practically impossible for vehicles driving in the opposite direction to collide, it is to be expected that the number of carriageways greatly influences the number of crashes." @default.
