- W1596676548 abstract "Water supply planning is one of the most important practical applications of hydrological theory. Water supply planners need to understand the performance of supply systems through a range of different meteorological conditions, often with limited historical hydrological records. Hydrological modelling underpins these assessments, often using simple lumped catchment models because of the scale of analysis needed. However, these approaches tend to assume stationarity of both climate and catchment response. With an uncertain future, water supply planning is set to move towards risk-based approaches, preferring planning solutions that are robust to a wide range of future conditions. This will require water resources planners to consider explicitly the different sources of uncertainty, including climate and catchment change and hydrological modelling uncertainty. Research case studies have demonstrated different approaches to this problem, but practitioners are rarely able to use research models. To transfer these methods from research to practice requires effective knowledge exchange, with researchers working to understand the pressures and problems faced by practitioners. Practitioners need stable, documented and reliable hydrological models and time and resources to maintain and update their skills. By working together, academics and practitioners can ensure that improvements in hydrological modelling and understanding help to maintain secure water supplies over the coming decades." @default.
