- W1596896449 abstract "Relative clauses in Upper German dialects (Alemannic, Bavarian, also Hessian dialects and many others) are introduced by the invariable particle wo and an additional pronoun of the dseries (demonstrative). The occurrence of the latter depends on the dialect and/or specific syntactic configurations. The common view takes this situation as a DFC-configuration as it is typical for Upper German dialects. We will show that this view is probably too simplistic if one considers (i) the (possible) origin of the particle and (ii) the conditions under which the relative pronoun may occur. However, the main focus of the paper lies in a possible scenario on how wo developed. The claim being that wo is the wh-form of the particle so and this brings Upper German dialects in a row together with Scandinavian languages where the particle is som with a similar origin. This calls for a unified analysis of the syntax of relative clauses in the two variants of Germanic. It will be shown that this is true in that the both variants show the same properties – apart from independently attested differences. We will also address briefly the question why the particle so/wo is such a good candidate for introducing relative clauses. Finally, the role of the d-pronoun in light of the new perspective on the relative complementizer will be briefly considered. Relative clause formation strategies" @default.
