- W159690429 abstract "Upon invasion of a host cell, intracellular parasites can escape direct destruction by the humoral immune system. However, another level of defense can potentially be activated long before cell-mediated immune responses attack the parasitized cell. The host cell can rapidly induce its own death, a process which is called apoptosis. Apoptosis is a strictly regulated biochemical program that is normally induced when the cell becomes damaged or stressed or when the cell starts to proliferate in an uncontrolled manner. A number of intracellular parasites have evolved different strategies to escape destruction upon invasion by taking control over apoptotic pathways of the host cell. T. parva and T. annulata regulate the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins by inducing constitutive activation of host cell transcription factors. In addition to blocking apoptosis, Theileria parasites are known to induce continuous proliferation of the parasitized cell. Thus, T. parva and T. annulata-infected cells acquire the transformed phenotype of cancer cells. Although we are starting to realize which host cell signaling pathways contribute to Theileria-induced transformation, we are still far from understanding exactly how the parasite interferes with these signaling pathways. The identification of parasite molecules that are responsible for the constitutive activation of pathways regulating host cell survival and cell cycle progression will be the main challenge in the years to come. Keywords Theileria signal transductionapoptosistranscription factorNF-kBtransformation" @default.
