It also provides an overview of the current understanding of the atmosphere and environmental processes causing atmospheric changes. Remote sensing data helps to improve the prediction of weather patterns and establish the importance of changing atmospheric composition for global climate. The relevance and use of passive remote sounding of the atmosphere from space are discussed in the chapter. Global remote sensing observations are essential to understand the natural processes that determine the global behavior of the atmosphere and to assess the impact of human activity on the atmosphere. In addition, remote sensing of the atmosphere provides the data needed to assess the impact of international agreements designed to limit the environmental impact of industrial activity.
