- W1598280682 abstract "abstract This Article examines generational shifts in possibilities for the development of women's positive personhood in Manenberg. In this poor residential area on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa, the effects of democratisation have been contradictory and generationally uneven for women. Building on established theories of female ordentlikheid (respectability), supplemented by detailed ethnographic research, I suggest that historical structural supports for poor, Coloured women of the area – work and welfare – enabled them to become central and respected figures in their homes and communities. This has changed in the post-apartheid era as macro-political economic shifts have largely eroded, or removed, these resources that were critical for women in conditions of relative deprivation. Historical supports continue – to some degree – to benefit the older women who utilised them adeptly in the past; however, teenage girls no longer have a clear path to becoming women of social standing. Consequently, generational differences are rapidly widening as senior women's positions are cemented, and young women struggle to become recognised and valued members of local social networks." @default.
