- W1598528170 abstract "All kinds of pesticides have been scrutinized in hundreds of epidemiological studies for their potential to cause cancer in humans. To this end, a wide variety of definitions both for chemical classes as well as characteristics of exposure and for the disease entities under study have been used. Associations have been reported in these studies with many different types of cancer, however few, if any, of these associations can be considered established and causal. The strongest suspicions exist regarding some organochlorine substances, most of which have meanwhile become obsolete. Inconsistencies across studies regarding both exposure and disease definitions severely hamper conclusions with respect to causality. Thus, apart from some arsenic compounds, ethylene oxide (as an ingredient in fumigants) and TCDD (as a contaminant in some herbicide formulations), not a single pesticide has been clearly identified as a cause of human cancer. The IARC classifies occupational exposures in spraying and application of nonarsenical insecticides as ‘probably carcinogenic to humans’ (group 2A), but they have not been able to identify single substances as probable causative agents. Although, with regard to the importance of agrochemicals, pesticides, and biocides for hygiene, health, and nutrition such substances will continue to be used in the future, prudent use of these biologically active substances is required. The observance of good practice regulations will at least result in the avoidance of unwanted exposures including poisoning cases through accidents or negligence, which pose a known and relevant health risk worldwide." @default.
