- W159857901 abstract "Evidence for the cellular, subcellular and topographical distribution of steroid hormone target sites has been obtained through the use of our dry-mount and thaw-mount autoradiographic techniques. This historical review documents that the autoradiographic data frequently precede or contradict negative biochemical evidence and serve as a guide for refined biochemical, anatomical, physiological and behavioral studies. The autoradiographic results indicate that specific receptors exist in select populations of nerve cells for all mammalian steroid hormones, including estrogen, progestagen, androgen, gluco- and mineralcorticosteroids and dihydroxyvitamin D3. The wide distribution of genomic target sites, together with other evidence, suggests a leading role of steroid hormones in the activation of brain functions and in the regulation of aminergic-peptidergic neurons." @default.
