- W1599055909 abstract "This paper examines the factors associated with Canadian firms voluntarily disclosing climate change information through the Carbon Disclosure Project. Five hypotheses are presented to explain the factors influencing management's decision to disclose this information. These hypotheses include a response to shareholder activism, domestic institutional investor shareholder activism, signalling, litigation risk, and low cost publicity. Both binary logistic regressions as well as a cross-sectional analysis of the equity market's response to the environmental disclosures being made were used to test these hypotheses. Support was found for shareholder activism, low cost publicity, and litigation risk. However, the equity market's response was not found to be statistically significant. Acknowledgments First and foremost I offer my sincerest gratitude to my supervisor, Dr. Fayez A. Elayan, his drive to research has been an inspiration, setting an example I only hope I can live up to. His guidance has not only helped me throughout the. Masters program, but laid a solid foundation which I believe will drive me to future success. I attribute the level of my Masters degree to his encouragement and effort and without him this thesis, too, would not have been completed or written. One simply could not wish for a better supervisor. I would also like to mention my external examiner Dr. Khalid Nainar, from the DeGroote School of Business at McMasters, and my committee Dr. Sandra Felton and Dr. Jennifer Li. I am extremely happy to have received all of your input. The insights you have provided have elevated the quality of this thesis, and for that I thank you. I would be remiss if I did not mention how supportive on a whole the Department of Accounting at Brock has been. While the list is not exhaustive, I would like to mention three professors who have been highly influentiaL Dr. Gail Cook has been a pillar of support throughout both my Undergraduate and Master's studies. Dr. Samir Trabelsi has not only helped me in my studies, but his drive to produce high quality research sets an example that I hope to model as I continue forward in my studies. Dr. Darlene Bay has been an inspiration, opening my eyes to many new ideas and thoughts. The help and support from these professors and many more have made my experience at Brock one to look back at in fondness. Of course, it is not just the quality of the professors, but the calibre of students that make a program great. When I started the Masters of Science in Management program I only knew that I was one of two students pursuing the Accounting stream of research. I am extremely happy that Shane Nicholls was that other student. He has been an excellent study partner, colleague and friend. I would also like to thank my beautiful wife Tammy who has been both supportive and understanding. My daughters Madison, Kaileigh and Layna have provided me with the motivation to drive myself to higher levels of success. It was my father and step mother, Siegfried and Maryellen Wegener that provided the initial encouragement to take my first step back to schooL My mother and step father, Elinor and Lee Rattray also provided much needed support throughout my entire education. I have been truly blessed with a wonderful family. Last, but definitely not least, I would like to thank the CAIBrock University Institute for International Issues in Accounting for· its generous fmancial support. I could only imagine how much more difficult this entire process would have been had I not received funding from CAIBrock University Institute for International Issues in Accounting." @default.
