- W1599096056 abstract "Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that damages the immune system of an infected person. Surveillance for HIV infection is conducted in all 50 states and US territories and is a part of the nation's notifiable disease surveillance system. Standard methods and principles are used to monitor HIV infection, including case definitions, development of guidelines and performance standards, laboratory reporting, risk factor ascertainment, uses and management of the data, evaluation, and security and confidentiality. As discussed in this chapter, HIV surveillance data form the basis of the country's prevention and care programs as well as the core of the formula for funding government-supported medical care. HIV surveillance is the only notifiable disease system used as the basis for distributing over $2 billion each year for the medical care of infected persons. The HIV surveillance system continually responds to a changing epidemic and technology with recent advancements in the system such as HIV incidence, electronic laboratory reporting, and development of new measures such as community viral load. HIV notifiable disease reporting continues to be the basic building block of the nation's response to the HIV epidemic." @default.
