- W1599497137 abstract "The strength of adhesion between fibroblasts and the glass substratum on which they have been cultured has been assessed quantitatively by determining the percentage of cells detached by known shearing forces. When cells are detached, the glass surface is altered in such a way that trypsinised cells adhere to it more strongly in serum-free media than to untreated glass. This alteration in the glass surface does not occur when the cultured cells are suspended in hanging drops, away from the glass. The increased stickiness of the glass for the cells is not demonstrable after trypsin treatment of the glass from which cells are sheared. It is concluded that cells are not detached cleanly at the cell surface/ substratum interface, but that the cell surface itself is ruptured and that cellular material is left on the glass. It is postulated on physical considerations and experimental evidence that, whenever adhesions between a cell and its substratum are “broken”, as in amoeboid movement, material from the cell surface may be left on the substratum, and substratum material may be carried away on the cell surface." @default.
