- W1599584617 abstract "This chapter discusses complications of multiple sclerosis (MS) such as fatigue, spasticity, ataxia, pain, and bowel, bladder, and sexual dysfunction. Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms in MS, affecting more than 85% of patients, and is certainly one of the most disabling from the patient's perspective. It poses a great challenge because of difficulties in defining the entity, understanding the underlying mechanisms, measuring its impact, and alleviating it. Fatigue may be defined as an overwhelming sense of tiredness, lack of energy, and feeling of exhaustion far in excess of what might be expected for the associated level of activity. It may occur at any stage of MS and is not strongly correlated with either disability or mobility. Different mechanisms may contribute to the global symptoms of fatigue: a poor sleeping pattern (because of nocturia, nocturnal spasms, pain); immunological factors (cytokines, impaired stress response, altered cerebral metabolism); medications (e.g., interferons, antispastics); and impaired motor functions (maximal force decay during exercise, decreased firing rate and inadequate recruitment of motor units, and impaired drive to motor cortex)." @default.
