- W1600546166 abstract "Cooperative catalysis, where two or more factors are responsible for a polymerization reaction to occur, has been proven to have a huge impact in the past decade and is used for many of polymerization reactions. In this chapter we focus on select examples where these systems are applied for the polymerization of lactide and other cyclic esters, the polymerization of vinyl monomers, and the copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides. The properties of the resulting polymer scaffolds (polyesters, polyacrylates, polypropylene carbonates) can be influenced and tuned over a wide range by using sophisticated cooperative systems. For instance, zinc dicarboxylates became the industrially relevant heterogeneous catalysts for propylene/CO2 copolymerization and have been investigated in detail in terms of structure and mechanisms. Furthermore, the polymerization of lactones can be promoted by systems combining metal-based Lewis acids with organic bases, and cooperative effects of Lewis acid/base pairs are used for the polymerization of acrylic monomers. These and other strategies as well as future directions are elucidated in detail in this chapter." @default.
