- W1601547042 abstract "The aim was to study the variation of oxidative status as birth (chronological) age increases. Suitable methods were used to determine the plasma activities of two endogenous antioxidant enzymes: Super oxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and the plasma levels of two markers of oxidative damage: malondialdehyde (MDA) and erythrocyte osmotic fragility (EOF) in apparently healthy volunteers. The results show that the activity of SOD decreases as birth age increases (P0.05) and the levels of MDA and EOF clearly were found to increase with increasing age. The study gives credence to the oxidative stress theory of ageing and supports the idea that conditions which increase the antioxidant potential of the plasma could possibly contribute to delay in ageing and thus increase longevity." @default.
