- W1601749331 abstract "Chapters on sex therapy and treatment of sexual concerns are typically buried within the sexological literature and rarely read by a broader audience of healthcare professionals. However, the high prevalence of sexual dysfunction and its comorbidity with a wide range of medical and psychological ailments means that most healthcare providers will encounter patients with sexual concerns. A sharp pendulum shift in the late 1990s following the approval of sildenafil citrate (Viagra) for men meant that researchers began to fiercely search for a pharmacological equivalent that might solve women's highly prevalent sexual concerns. However, despite nearly 15 years of intense search and billions of dollars in clinical trials, there remains no pharmacological treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for improving women's sexual difficulties. In recent years, news of the beneficial effects of mindfulness skills in many domains of psychological function and well-being has spread to the sexological community, and there has been great interest in the clinical use of mindfulness skills. There has also been a small smattering of empirical studies testing mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) in various populations of women with sexual dysfunction. Although much remains to be understood about how effective MBIs may be for improving women's sexual health and the mechanisms underlying such improvements, it is clear that MBIs are contributing to another pendulum shift in approaches to managing distressing sexual symptoms in women." @default.
