- W1601996432 abstract "After publication in 1994 of a comprehensive review concerning a sudden commencement, development of computation techniques has enabled us to simulate global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) phenomena like sudden commencements. A self-consistent global MHD simulation of the magnetosphere buffeted by a pressure pulse in the solar wind revealed magnetospheric MHD processes during a sudden commencement unambiguously. Validity of the simulation is assured by confirming that the simulated ionospheric potential is similar to that obtained from recent network observations of geomagnetic variations during a sudden commencement. The simulation manifested that the preliminary impulse is generated through MHD wave processes in which the inertial current is dominant. On the other hand, the diamagnetic current becomes predominant in the main impulse phase. The simulation explains that overshoot in the horizontal geomagnetic variations at auroral latitudes in the main impulse phase is associated with the transient, small-scale plasma vortex in the magnetosphere. In the future, the transient plasma vortex should be confirmed with some observations. By discussing two opinions about global transmission of the preliminary impulse signal (the Earth-ionosphere waveguide and direct transmission through the magnetosphere), we propose that the former and the latter contribute mainly to the enhanced equatorial signal and to signals at middle and low latitudes, respectively." @default.
