• W16025275 abstract "Alberto Sols died unexpectedly while this autobiographical chapter was being written. We went thoroughly through his notes trying to put together in a logical order what he left. We hope that what we have collected may give a glimpse of the personality and scientific work of A. Sols. Unfortunately, we have been unable to find anything concerning his establishment in Spain when back from Cori's laboratory in St. Louis, MO (U.S.A.). We have heard him, however, tell how he arrived in Spain. He had spent all his savings buying a Klett photometer and some reagents and, having used his last money to clear the customs, had nothing left to pay the shuttle from the ship to the harbour, not to mention the train ticket to Madrid. Very likely this part was not written. The work of Sols was of paramount importance for the creation of a high-quality Spanish biochemistry. His emphasis on excellence was constant and permeated other laboratories. No wonder that he was able to attract enthusiastic young people who respected him for his dedication and intellectual rigor. Indeed it would be difficult to find some established biochemist in Spain who has not been in one way or another influenced by Sols. Generous with his ideas he was always ready to give advice on how to reorient a research or how to stress important points in a paper. The creation of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry was mainly due to his enthusiasm and the standards of quality he set for it have guided other Spanish scientific societies. Some of his enzymological work has become classical and his accomplishments in this field brought him a wide international audience.
