- W1602548439 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses several adverse effects of antibiotic drugs. Parenteral administration of aminoglycosides results in the accumulation of the antibiotics in the renal tissues of experimental animals and man. They may persist there and cause damage to the tissues, especially the brushborder membranes of the proximal tubules. Excretion of specific enzymes in the urine is a parameter of renal damage. The major clinical consequence of renal toxicity is the accumulation of the antibiotics in the blood, which is associated with a risk of irreversible ototoxic reactions and may perhaps also cause a further deterioration in the function of kidneys already damaged. Ototoxicity in patients receiving netilmicin, even in those on comparatively high-dose regimens, has been rare. However, the number of patients treated with high doses of netilmicin is still limited. The stability of amikacin to most of the bacterial enzymes that inactivate gentamicin and tobramycin makes it an agent of first choice against aminoglycoside-resistant gram-negative bacteria. Indiscriminate use of the antibiotic should be avoided because of the risk of the emergence of hospital strains of bacteria resistant to amikacin." @default.
