- W160256801 abstract "This chapter outlines the patient accrual to clinical trials. Techniques for accruing patients are as diverse as the research professionals themselves. Due to the complex nature of modern health care, no single individual can accrue all patients to a clinical trial. It must be a team effort led by physicians and assisted by nurses and clinical research assistants. Interventions aimed at enhancing public knowledge and understanding of clinical trials promotes increased trial participation. The patient needs to know the facts about clinical trials and be aware that the hospital/clinic they are coming to is making research a top priority and will be presenting clinical trials to them if warranted. Increasing community awareness of an institution's participation in research is important to increase patient accrual to clinical trials. An outreach program is simply a plan to go into the community and educate the public about clinical trials. It is suggested to develop a smooth, working system that benefits both patients and medical professionals before offering clinical trials to patients. It is also suggested that informed consent is one tool that can help give the patient autonomy in a situation when patients are already very close to losing their independence." @default.
