- W1602747576 abstract "This chapter focuses on radiation induced polymerization at low temperature. One of the most important recent advances in radiation chemistry has been in polymerization at low temperature. Some monomers polymerize only in the solid state by high-energy initiation. Sometimes the polymerization is possible at extremely low temperature, at about -200°C, and the rate of polymerization becomes much more rapid in the crystalline state than in the liquid state. Most conventional vinyl monomers, either in bulk or in solution, polymerize in a manner that shows the well-known kinetic features of a free-radical reaction at ordinary temperature. Interesting phenomena recently studied in liquid-state polymerization include radiation reactions via partial ionic and partial radical mechanisms. The contribution of each mechanism is affected by several factors, such as polymerization temperature, kind of solvents, and dose rates. Ionic polymerization is greater in the presence of polar solvents, as the ionic species induced by radiation are stabilized." @default.
