- W1602856993 abstract "This essay explores the foreign policy rhetoric of China through its official press agency Xinhua’s English web-based version in the case of China’s territorial dispute with Japan over the Senkaku/Diaoyu//Diaoyutai (S/D) islands. The dispute was brought to life in September 2012 and the essay covers Xinhua’s rhetoric between then and September 2014 through a rhetorical analysis of articles published on the matter at five different time intervals. The analytical method is eclectic in the sense that it encompasses several different methods for analyzing text and rhetoric, although what might be deemed a neoclassical method of rhetorical analysis forms the core of the approach. The analysis also takes into account factors of cultural significance in eastern Asian societies such as history and “face”. The results suggest that Xinhua’s rhetoric is consistently characterized by an uncompromising and unyielding stance on the matter, and it also reveals the sensitivity of the issue as China respond harshly to any action regarding the islands that might be considered provocative. The periodical lack of published articles on the matter also suggests however that China are willing to shelve the matter as long as Japan remain cautious and quiet." @default.
