- W1603211698 abstract "This chapter discusses the several standardized media-based methods used to detect bacteria that are currently used as indicators of marine water quality in the United States (total and fecal coliforms, enterococci, and Clostridium pecfringens). Also included is an F-specific RNA coliphage assay (a group of viruses/bacteriophage that utilizes the coliform Escherichia coli, which can produce pili, as a host) that has been used by a number of researchers to assess biological water quality. The value of the F'-specific RNA coliphage assay is that it may assist in identifying the source of contamination (animal versus human). Molecular techniques such as RT-PCR, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and immuno-fluorescent assays are employed for pathogen screening apart from screening for indicators. Pathogens such as the Norwalk viruses and Small Round Structured viruses apart from techniques such as biomarker profiling and antibiotic resistance profiling prove to be valuable tools in identifying the ideal indicator(s) or indicator system." @default.
