This chapter discusses several integrated circuit solutions to dispersion compensation in optical communication links. It briefly describes different types of dispersion, and introduces the use of linear filters for dispersion compensation. As examples of linear filters, finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) filter topologies are described and measurement results are also presented in the chapter. The chapter then talks about nonlinear (decision feedback) dispersion compensation techniques such as decision feedback equalization (DFE). Alternative approaches to dispersion compensation such as maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) and adaptive optics are finally discussed.
