A B S T R A C T — “The Composition of a Bird Community and its Variation along an Urban Gradient (Tucuman, Argentina)”. Information on the effect that urbanization causes on biodiversity is still limited. Although several research studies were carried out in the Northern Hemisphere, the information is scarce for Latin America. The purpose of this study is to investigate the composition of a bird community in an urban gradient in the province of Tucuman (Argentina). Three different types of urbanization sites were selected, not only based on its relation “vegetation-concrete” but also for its buildings. A total of 711 line transects were performed at the different sites during two years. Seventy nine species were found within the gradient. Strong differences were observed among the different sampling sites. The richest site corresponded to the residential area, with abundant vegetation; in poorer sections of the city, with less vegetation, the richness decreases considerably, and the relative importance of exotic species, especially Passer domesticus, increases. As for downtown (very little vegetation and concentration of high buildings), the presence of exotic species is important as well as those that exploit the highest stratum." @default.
