- W1604484186 abstract "Dermatologic problems are common presenting complaints in acute care settings. Skin problems, while often benign, can represent cutaneous manifestations of severe underlying medical disease. Early recognition of such dermatologic emergencies is critical to ensuring prompt treatment and optimal outcome. This chapter outlines a rational approach to the patient who presents with a rash. First priority is to identify a dermatologic emergency through the use of signs, symptoms, and clinical features suggestive of the same. Multiple examples of dermatologic emergencies are discussed in detail. Initiating treatment and transfer of these patients is paramount. The second priority is identifying common, clinically identifiable rashes for which treatment can be initiated. Urticaria, toxicodendron dermatitis, Lyme, and Zoster are discussed in detail. The final priority is determining appropriate dose, route, and duration of steroid therapy for the effective management of patients presenting with a rash. A flow diagram (Figure 1) reinforces the conceptual approach detailed within the text." @default.
