• W1604592021 abstract "Despite the post-1970s resurgence of AmericanIndian identity, American Indians remain largely invisible incontemporary society. Racial formations, including common sensenotions of race and place, contribute to the racialmisidentification (and further invisibility) of American Indianswho live in urban spaces – approximately 60% of the U.S. AmericanIndian/Alaskan Native population. This dissertation explores theeffects of macro-historical racial projects on the formation ofurban American Indian racial/ethnic identities, as well as the mesoand micro level strategies utilized by American Indians as theynegotiate these identities in the urban sphere of Northeast Ohio.Specifically, I delineate two pathways – reclamation and relocation– to urban American Indian identity. Utilizing an ethnographicapproach, I illustrate how these pathways manifest in differentexperiences of American Indian identity for the members of two NEOhio Native community organizations: Native People ReclaimingIndian Identities (NatPride, Reclaimers) and the Relocated Indiansof Ohio (RelOH, Relocators). In addition to participating in andobserving these community groups, I conducted formal interviewswith 39 self-identified Native residents of NE Ohio. My comparative analysis of NatPride and RelOHmembers' experiences reveals that pathway to urban Indiannessaffects (1) the process of becoming Indian, (2) the ability toaccomplish Indianness intrapersonally and in interactions withothers, and (3) the organizational priorities and strategies ofurban Indian communities. The dissertation also explores NE OhioNatives' perceptions of the Cleveland Major League Baseball (MLB)franchise's pseudo-Indian mascot, Wahoo. Although pathwaydoes not map neatly onto Native respondents' views regarding themascot, the respondents who most vehemently resisted Chief Wahoolived in reservation environments prior to moving to the urbanenvironment of NE Ohio. Ultimately, this research investigatesAmerican Indian racial/ethnic identity as a macro, meso, and microlevel phenomenon, and in doing so, reveals the multi-tiered effectsof racial formations on the day-to-day lives of urban AmericanIndians." @default.
