- W1605961097 abstract "In a recent paper Burnham and Sweeney (1989) present a chemical kinetic model of vitrinite reflectance and maturation. The model uses a number of independent parallel first-order kinetic reactions, characterized by a discrete distribution of Arrhenius activation energies, to model the evolution in elemental composition of vitrinite as a function of time and temperature. The reflectance of vitrinite is then calculated from correlations between elemental composition and reflectance. Consistency with many different data sets is a good quality measure of geochemical and other models; the greater variety of data a model can explain, the more likely it is that the basic model assumptions are physically and chemically sensible, and that they represent a general and fundamental phenomenon. The kinetic vitrinite model of Burnham and Sweeney (1989) successfully fends off the trials provided by the important data set of evolution of vitrinite elemental composition and vitrinite reflectance for a large range of heating rates. It is calibrated to do that, and experience with maturity modelling in the North Sea region indicates that it performs well. However, the subject here is the kinetic representation of the process of vitrinite maturation. The key element in the Burnham and Sweeney approach is the widemore » distribution of activation energies, which is necessary in order to calibrate a vitrinite maturation model that extrapolates from laboratory to geological maturation temperatures and also to achieve the large dynamic range of maturation characteristic of vitrinite. It is acknowledged that such a distribution is necessary within the model concept of independent parallel reactions. It is pointed out, however, that this simple and attractive kinetic representation is inconsistent with another important maturity basic correlation, namely the relationship between vitrinite reflectance and pyrolysis T[sub max] given by Teichmueller and Durand (1983).« less" @default.
