- W1606281683 abstract "We explored how humans use visual information tocompute estimates of three-dimensional (3D) surface orientationthat can be used to guide motor behavior. First, we investigatedhow the visual system integrates monocular and binocularinformation for two different natural tasks, object placement andprehension. Binocular information influenced 3D orientationestimates more when subjects grasped a disc than when they placedan object on the same disc, regardless of whether the tasks wereperformed separately by different subjects or together by the samesubjects in interleaved sessions. We also measured processingspeeds since these can affect cue integration, but there were nosignificant differences between tasks. We concluded that how oneuses visual cues for motor control depends on the informationdemands of the task being performed, whereas how quickly theinformation is processed appears to be task invariant. Second, weassessed the usefulness of stereopsis across the visual field.Binocular information had a smaller influence relative to monocularinformation on 3D orientation estimates for stimuli at largerretinal eccentricities and distances from the horopter wherestereoacuity is worse than monocular acuity. The results were aspredicted by a Bayesian integration scheme in which the cues wereweighted according to their relative reliabilities across thevisual field. We concluded that stereopsis is of limited use in theperiphery and away from the horopter because monocular cues aremore reliable in these regions. Third, we evaluated the potentialrole of orientation disparity as a binocular cue to 3D orientationby simulating a population of binocular visual cortical neuronstuned to orientation disparity and measuring the amount of Fisherinformation contained in the activity patterns. We concluded thatorientation disparity provides an efficient source of informationabout 3D orientation and that it is plausible that the visualsystem could have mechanisms that are sensitive to it, although itwould be most useful when combined with estimates from positiondisparity gradients and monocular perspectivecues." @default.
