- W1606365893 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a mathematical model that gives insight into the observed phenomenon of vascular collapse. The chapter incorporates the concept of anisotropic growth in a model that examines the evolution of stresses in a growing vascular tumor, attempting to elucidate the observed phenomenon of vascular collapse. This new model allows the growing tumor to develop two distinct regions: a rapidly growing, well-vascularized outer region and a central region where the growth-induced stresses cause vascular collapse. The evolution of growth-induced stresses produced may elucidate the experiments reported by Goldacre and Sylven. These investigators observed that blood vessels often collapse at some depth within the tumor, with an apparent re-opening of vessels further inside the tumor. This model may be applied to the study of the administration of cytotoxic drugs, where the tumor cells in the outer, well-vascularized region can be killed preferentially. The stress-relief afforded by this process, and the concomitant decompression of previously collapsed blood vessels could then be investigated." @default.
