* * * Credit rationing is for many Keynesian economists one of the most important examples of market failure in a modern capitalistic economy. When the demand for credit exceeds the supply, one would expect that demanders or opportunistic suppliers raise the price. In reality, this is not always the case. The goal of this article is threefold. First of all, a theoretical framework is presented in which the phenomenon ‘credit rationing’ is analysed, the different types are indicated and the reasons why it may exist, are being explained. In addition, possible theoretical solutions for credit rationing, being collateral, covenants, term structure and relationship lending, are discussed. Moreover, attention is given to some recent facts and trends in Belgian banking business which are being examined from a theoretical point of view. They may, nowadays or in the future, have a certain influence on bank lending to firms and more in particular to SME’s." @default.
