- W1606952973 abstract "1. Pretreatment of unfertilized sea urchin eggs with UN (10−4–5 × 10−4 M, pH 5.5–7.0) inhibits the cortical change induced by spermatozoa or butyric acid, while the cortical change caused by Monogen or sodium choleinate is not inhibited. 2. If eggs are fertilized in the presence of UN, the cortical change is impaired to a certain extent. 3. The presence of UN inhibits also the cortical change induced by butyric acid. In order to determine what step of the chain of reactions making up the cortical change is directly blocked by UN, one or both of the procedures (exposure of eggs to butyric acid and subsequent washing with normal sea water) were carried out in the presence of UN. It was shown that UN acts on some reaction which takes place mainly after the transfer of the eggs to normal sea water. 4. In the presence of UN, occasionally a pronounced delay of the membrane elevation (taking place 3–15 minutes after butyric acid treatment) was observed. 5. When eggs exposed to butyric acid-sea water in the presence or absence of UN are put into UN-sea water and then transferred to normal sea water, the membrane elevation takes place, unless the duration of exposure to UN exceeds a certain limit (30–120 seconds). Within this limit, membrane elevation is delayed and increasingly impaired as the duration of exposure to UN-sea water is prolonged. 6. Eggs treated with UN-butyric acid-sea water were put into normal sea water and then transferred to UN-sea water. The results indicate that the UN-sensitive reaction mainly takes place in the first half of the period between the transfer of eggs from butyric acid to normal sea water and the beginning of the membrane elevation. 7. The cortical change induced by Monogen and sodium choleinate is not at all inhibited by UN. 8. Ba… also blocks the cortical change induced by spermatozoa and butyric acid. 9. The possibility is discussed that one of the early steps of the cortical change, which might be the fertilization wave, is underlain by a phosphate-involving reaction on the cell surface, and that UN blocks it by forming complexes with such phosphate compounds." @default.
