- W1607205280 abstract "In animals, blood glucose concentration is maintained within a very narrow range due to a dynamic balance between production, storage, and release of glucose. Abnormalities in glucose homeostasis occur commonly in the small animal patient. Hypoglycemia may occur in the small animal patient due to decreased production of glucose by the body or increased utilization. Current veterinary research suggests that hyperglycemia is occurring in critically ill veterinary patients. As derangements in blood glucose concentration are common, blood glucose measurements and serial blood glucose monitoring should be performed on all critically ill patients. Common instruments currently used to rapidly evaluate blood glucose concentration in small animals include portable blood glucose meters (PBGM) and point-of-care (POC) analyzers such as the I-stat and the NOVA Stat Profile. Frequent monitoring is particularly important in the short- and long-term management of diabetic patients, in which glycemic control is achieved through adjustments in insulin therapy." @default.
