- W160820399 abstract "Herodas, alias Herondas or Herodes,1 in his eighth mimiambos dreams a dream. The details, so far as a defective text reveals them, suggest a festival of Dionysos; the writer looks forward, it appears, to future fame (70), anticipates attack from his detractors (uniden tified, 71) and speaks of singing 'crooked verses' to Ionians in imitation of Hipponax (78). These data, whether or not Herodas so intended, appropriately introduce his writing — dramatic poems which, in their choliambic metre, Ionic dialect and rare vocabulary, are closely reminiscent of Hipponax. The fame which the dreamer foresaw in fact eluded him: he is cited some dozen times by ancient lexicographers,2 but only Pliny, in compliment to a literary friend, has left us a literary judgement. In the mimiambi of Arrius Antoninus Pliny discovered, among that writer's other qualities, a degree of 'humanitas' and 'venustas' which might pass for the work of Calli machus or Herodes (Ep. 4.3.3.). Of ancient detractors, if any, we hear nothing — the name of Herodas disappears, for praise or blame, not to re-emerge until Kenyon's publication of the BM papyrus in 1891.3 Further papyrus fragments of the dream were identified and pieced together later.4 Thereafter, the dreamer's forebodings are fulfilled in the magisterial verdict of Mahaffy: 'The Greeks generally ... were not indeed people of ideal form, life or taste. But the society of Herodas is lower than any decent average in any civilised country. It contains no virtues, and even its vices are low and disgusting'.5 I lack the acquaintance with civilised societies to appreciate this sweeping claim in detail, but its central truth is not to be contested. Diomedes defined mime as 'an imitation of life that comprehends behaviour both permitted and forbidden',6 and Herodas' mimes support that (albeit later) definition. His cast, in order of appear ance, is:" @default.
