- W16103431 abstract "Riassunto. - Non esistono chiare evidenze scientifiche circa i meccanismi biologici attraverso i quali l’incremento dei livelli delle particelle aerosospese inalabili (PM10) possa causare l’aumento di mortalita e di morbidita per malattie cardiovascolari e respiratorie nella popolazione esposta, cosi come dimostrato da studi epidemiologici. I dati tossicologici finora ottenuti indicano una migliore correlazione fra frazione fine del PM10 e malattie polmonari e mortalita cardiovascolare, mentre la frazione coarse sembra contribuire agli effetti osservati nelle alte vie respiratorie e nel tratto tracheobronchiale. La diversita di effetti delle due principali frazioni granulometriche potrebbe essere conseguenza sia della distribuzione nell’apparato respiratorio che della reattivita superficiale. L’attivita biologica delle particelle sembra essere dovuta alla produzione di radicali e all’induzione di stress ossidativo ed infiammazione polmonare, con conseguente possibilita di uno stato infiammatorio e procoagulante sistemico. Summary (Biological effects of PM10 relevant to human health). - Recent epidemiological studies have shown a consistent association between ambient levels of inhalable particles (PM10) and exacerbation of respiratory diseases as well as cardiovascular morbidity and adult mortality in high risk groups. The particles responsible of the observed health effects are unknown; it seems that different particles could be related to different effects, depending on the deposition pattern in the airways and on the chemical reactivity. Larger particles could be more related to upper airway and tracheobronchial effects while the smaller carbonaceous particles seem to be preferentially involved in inflammation and cardiopulmonary injury. It has been proposed that the possible biological mechanisms of action of PM could be related to its radical activity and the induction of oxidative stress and lung inflammation followed by systemic low grade inflammation and pro-coagulant state." @default.
