On one airplane model, multiple harmonics and sum and difference tones occasionally appeared, indicating a non-linear mechanism within the engine/airframe system. Associated cabin noise squawks led to an investigation to determine the sources of the non-linearities and the controlling parameters. A gap in an intershaft bearing, connecting the high and low engine rotors, was theorized to be the source. A math model with a non-linear bearing confirmed the expected behavior and further reinforced the theory. Rotor unbalance influence coefficients, derived from a system model, demonstrated how a statistically low probability combination of high pressure compressor and turbine unbalances could cause loss of 1g contact in the intershaft bearing. A flight test demonstrated that certain airplane maneuvers, inducing gyro loads on the bearing, could switch the beat on and off as predicted by math modeling." @default.
