- W161717767 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the structural and functional organization of an epithelial cell brush border. It has been suggested that the brush border may most easily be interpreted, in three dimensions, as being composed of a membrane, or skin, covering a skeleton of rodlike elements embedded in an underlying meshwork. On this basis, the elements in one of the density gradient fractions would appear to be identified as the skeleton of rodlike elements, namely, the cores of the microvilli, still attached to the terminal web. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the plasma membranes, which cover the microvilli, are found in an entirely different density gradient fraction. McDougal, Little, and Crane obtained data, concluded that the absorptive process for sugars is located within the brush border region. This conclusion has been amply corroborated by the work of Kinter and of Kinter and Wilson, who used an autoradiographic technique, and this has been extended to the absorptive process for amino acids. These studies show that sugar, present in the luminal medium at a low concentration, moves across the brush border membrane into the cell at a high concentration. They also supported the assumption that the process of sugar active transport, together with whatever accessory reactions or metabolic gears may be necessary, is entirely contained within the brush border." @default.
