- W1617382390 abstract "Electron-opaque tracers have proved to be valuable tools for determining the pathways of endocytosis. This chapter provides an overview of some principles in the use of tracers for studies on endocytosis. There are two major classes of tracers—(1) the mass tracers best exemplified by hemoproteins, such as horseradish peroxidases, and (2) particulate tracers best exemplified by native ferritin and colloidal gold. Either type of tracer can be used as a direct tag for other molecules. The same tracers may function as a fluid-phase marker under some conditions and as a membrane marker under other conditions. Hence, it is necessary to consider the possible interactions between a potential marker and the cell surface. The most frequently used fluid-phase markers are horseradish peroxidase, native ferritin, and neutral dextrans. Because they are internalized in proportion to their concentration in the intercellular space or surrounding medium, they are used at comparatively high concentrations." @default.
