• W1617771207 abstract "This chapter highlights major biases that exist in traditional theories of psychology. Since such theories typically have been operationalized and developed according to the values and standards of a Western, European philosophy, they have reflected a rather narrow band of human behavior. They either isolate competing explanations of behavior or present them in a less favorable light. For example, within traditional theories, individualism connotes strength and adaptability, whereas communal or collectivist patterns of behavior are indicative of submissiveness and a less influential status in society. Because of this underlying bias, alternative concepts of human behavior previously have received minimal attention in the mainstream study of psychology. Reflecting the bias toward individualism, self-reliance and self-regulation typically represent notions that are highly valued in society, such as self-control, personal freedom, and accountability. On an individual level, processes that focus on the self and are geared primarily toward personal advancement are viewed as prerequisites for productivity and adaptive functioning. As a result, the shortcomings of an individualistic philosophy often are overlooked. For example, perspectives primarily focusing on self-focus, in reality are not optimally adaptive and even can be counterproductive when practiced to an extreme. In contrast, a more societal perspective recognizes the shortcomings of a purely individualistic approach and highlights the notion that behaviors do not occur in a social vacuum. Therefore, the focus shifts to viewing environmental factors, such as standards, norms, and interpersonal interactions within people's social environment as predominant determinants of behavior." @default.
